Marta Mendes (Born 1969)
Marta Mendes is a Portuguese artist, whose birth name is Maria José Cunha. She was born in Almada and attended a Decorative Painting Course, in the “Instituto de Artes e Ofícios-Fundação Ricardo do Espirito Santo Silva”, in Lisbon.
Marta started her painting lessons with the painter João Serém, then beginning to “really see”, to produce her own colors, to free herself from the line and, from the Decorative Painting, she deepened the vision, tuned the colours and has discovered that in painting, everything is possible.
Marta worked at the Painting Atelier of the Fundação Ricardo do Espirito Santo Silva, where she had the opportunity to learn with Painting Masters, the old school techniques of painting and gilding.
The diversity of knowledge acquired throughout the years gave her the technical skills and the freedom to originally express her own world on the surface.
Marta Mendes paints since 2004 and is represented in several private collections, in Portugal and all over the world.
Marta Mendes is the creator of “The Woman Gallery”, which began as a blog in 2012, now being a larger project. This artist has been working since 2012 on the research of the woman imagery and is also developing a study on the women artists, a tribute to the women of all time.
